Description

Eastern Thailand is the world's major producer of Mangosteen, known as "Mongkut" in Thai. Mangosteen is a tree that thrives on heavy rainfall, and April to May is when the round brown fruit is ready for harvest. Besides using the popular sweet white fruit as a popular dessert and snack, the rind (pericarp) has long been used by South East Asians as an antiseptic, antiinflammatory, and as a treatment for skin disorders.

Mangosteen rind is rich in xanthones, a class of compounds that includes Alpha-Mangostin, Beta-Mangostin, Garcinone B, and Garcinone E. Also besides xanthones, mangosteen rind is also full of tannins, which also have antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of these qualities, no pesticides are used on the trees. These tough, fibrous rinds are dried in the sun and then powdered to a fine light brown to dark brown powder. No other fillers or additives are used.
